A discovery flight is a real first flying lesson with a certificated flight instructor at Hampton Roads Executive Airport (KPVG) in Chesapeake. You help with the preflight, take the controls in flight when you are comfortable, and land with a clear sense of whether flight training is for you. The time is loggable if you continue.
What actually happens, start to finish
You will meet your instructor at our unit at KPVG, talk briefly about how the flight works, then walk out to the aircraft together for the preflight inspection — you will see exactly how pilots verify an airplane is ready to fly. In the air, your instructor demonstrates the basics and then, when you are ready, you fly: gentle turns, climbs, and descents with the instructor right beside you at a second set of controls the whole time.
The view is the bonus: the Chesapeake waterways, the harbor, and Hampton Roads spread out below you. Routing depends on weather and air traffic that day, and your instructor will brief what is realistic before you launch.

Most first-time flyers carry some nerves to the airport. The flight is flown at your pace: your instructor explains everything before it happens, nothing is sprung on you, and you can simply ride and watch if that is what you want. You are never obligated to take the controls, and the flight can be as gentle as you like.

How long does a discovery flight take?
Plan for about an hour and a half at the airport: a short ground briefing, the preflight walkaround, the flight itself, and a debrief where your instructor answers every question you have.

What should I bring or wear?
