What does becoming a CFI involve?
A certificated flight instructor (CFI) holds a commercial or ATP certificate, passes the Fundamentals of Instruction and flight instructor knowledge tests, and demonstrates the ability to teach — not just fly — on a practical test. CFI training is where strong pilots become strong teachers, learning to explain, demonstrate, and correct from the right seat.
Teaching is the skill — flying is the prerequisite
CFI training assumes you can already fly to commercial standards. What it builds is everything else: lesson planning, explaining concepts at the student's level, demonstrating maneuvers while narrating them, recognizing and correcting errors early, and managing risk with a student at the controls. You will learn the Fundamentals of Instruction — how people actually learn — and how to apply it in an airplane. Expect to spend significant ground time preparing lesson plans and teaching them back before you ever teach from the right seat.
Why instructing matters — even beyond the job
Flight instruction is how many professional pilots build experience, and it is also the backbone of general aviation: every pilot you admire was built by instructors. Teaching deepens your own understanding in ways nothing else does. We are candid about the work involved — the CFI practical test is among the most demanding checkrides in general aviation — and we prepare candidates thoroughly rather than quickly. If we offer instrument instructor (CFII) or multi-engine instructor training at the time you train, we will lay out those pathways too; we do not advertise add-on ratings we cannot currently deliver.

Common questions
What certificates do I need before CFI training?
A commercial pilot certificate (or ATP) with the appropriate category and class ratings. Nearly all CFI candidates also hold an instrument rating, and an instrument rating is required to train instrument students as a CFII later.
How hard is the CFI checkride?
It is demanding — it evaluates teaching, not just flying. You will teach ground topics and in-flight maneuvers to the examiner as if they were a student. Thorough preparation of lesson plans and right-seat proficiency is what gets candidates through.
